(English name: Sodium formate; Formic acid sodium salt), also known as sodium formic acid salt. Its crystal contains two crystalline waters, so it is also named sodium formate dihydrate.

Sodium formate is the simplest organic carboxylate. It appears as white crystal or powder with a slight odor of formic acid. It is slightly deliquescent and hygroscopic.

Easily soluble in approximately 1.3 parts of water and glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and octanol, insoluble in ether. Its aqueous solution shows alkaline property.

Upon heating, sodium formate decomposes into hydrogen gas and sodium oxalate, and sodium carbonate will be generated subsequently.

Sodium formate is mainly used for the production of insurance powder, oxalic acid and formic acid. In the leather industry, it serves as a camouflage acid during chrome tanning. It can act as catalyst, synthetic stabilizer, as well as reducing agent in printing and dyeing industry.

Sodium formate is harmless to human body, yet it exerts irritating effects on eyes, respiratory system and skin.
